Peer Pressure, trauma, and anxiety

Hello Reader,

Check out the most recent episodes of Overpowering Emotions and Parents of the Year podcast!

On Overpowering Emotions, I lay the foundation for understanding trauma and anxiety. Trauma is an event or experience that overwhelms an individual's ability to cope, leading to feelings of intense fear, helplessness, and horror. Anxiety, on the other hand, is an excessive and persistent worry and fear.

While not everyone who experiences trauma develops an anxiety disorder, trauma can be a significant risk factor for developing anxiety. Trauma can alter the brain's stress response system, making individuals more sensitive to stress and more prone to anxiety. Additionally, avoidance behaviours that may develop as a coping mechanism after trauma can also contribute to the development of anxiety disorders.

On Parents of the Year, Andrew and I talk about how to help kids manage peer pressure. The pressure on kids these days is so much more than what we had to deal with when we were young. From cell phones to drinking to just making the right decisions without parents there to guide them, it's important to help kids deal with peer pressure in whatever form it takes.

In this episode, we talk about how important it is to be PROACTIVE in building up your kid's ability to resist peer pressure. Many parents get put into a position where they have to react to a situation in their kid's life, which is too late. It's better to work with your kids on the skills they'll need before they need them.
